ATTENTION LADIES!!! I need a single woman or an all female home! I'm afraid of men and it's so sad because I know I'm missing out on some wonderful homes. In fact, I was adopted out once and I loved my new mom and her 4 year old son but I was just too afraid of my new dad and they had to bring me back to the rescue. The people here think I was mistreated by a man in the past and I just can't get past it. I wish I could tell them exactly what happened to me. I can tell you that I was dumped in the woods down south and I'm afraid of gunshots and fireworks. My rescuer thinks I was probably a hunting dog who failed terribly since I don't have any kind of prey drive whatsoever. I love cats, dogs and young children and can settle into a new home easily. I'm very laid back but would like to go for a good run every once in a while. I know I have some special circumstances but I've been here in the rescue for 8 months already! Any girls out there willing to give me a safe and happy home?

Diego:
American Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer Mix
Neutered Male
2.5 years old as of 04/09
70 lbs.
Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley
www.petfinder.com/shelters/assv.html

Diego is 2.5 years old. He is friendly and very playful but needs a little work on some mouthy behavior so he would do best with a dog experienced owner. He does know 'sit' and 'shake' and is very good once he calms down a little bit. Diego is good with most other dogs and cats. He is best suited with no small children.

Gideon:
Shepherd, Hound Mix
Neutered Male
8 years old as of 04/09
Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley
www.petfinder.com/shelters/assv.html

Gideon is an 8 year old, neutered male, Shepherd/Hound/Lab/Rott mix?... Heinz 57 really. Poor Gideon has had an awful round of luck finding his furever home. He first came into the shelter as a stray in 2004 and was first adopted to a home with kids, unfortunately after a few months he decided that he really didn't want to live with children. Then he found a great home who loved him dearly, tragically his mom passed away in a car accident and Gideon came back to us. Then a year ago, Gideon found another mom to take care of him, but again found himself back with us this January because of a change in lifestyle :-(... so poor Gideon is on his fifth shot at the life he deserves. Gideon was in foster care along the way for a few months. In this foster home he lived with another female Retriever and also attended obedience lessons. Gideon is already housebroken too! He gets along great with cats and most other dogs (he does best with non-dominant females) but Gideon does need a home without kids. Surprisingly Gideon's spirit is going strong even after all his heartbreak and he is still a very happy guy. Gideon would love to fulfill his dream of finding a permanent and loving home, could it be yours?

Bear (09/09):
Akita, Chow Chow Mix
Neutered Male
3.5 years old as of 04/09
81 lbs.
Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley
www.petfinder.com/shelters/assv.html

Update: Bear has started attending obedience lessons 4 days a week at SUNY Cobleskill. He is being trained by some of the students there and is progressing very well. Bear also goes home several nights a week with one of his trainers and we have learned that Bear also has very good house manners and is housebroken!

Bear is a 3.5 year old, neutered male, Akita/Shepherd/Chow mix. Bear is very friendly and playful. Bear's history is a little complicated; he was brought into the shelter in February of 2008 by an owner who had "adopted" him the previous night after locating him on Craig's List; unfortunately her dogs and cats did not like Bear. The person who posted him on Craig's List had "rescued" but could not keep him because he also rescued cats and Bear doesn't get along with cats. And that is all the information we were able to obtain. So this poor dog has been shoved from home to home as a result of people's rash decisions and not thinking of what would best suit the dog. Now Bear is with us and we have been able to learn more about him so that we can find his furever home. Bear gets along quite well with the other dogs and even gets to go out in the playgroup of other dogs at the shelter (check the website noted above to watch his videos) but he does need a home without cats. Bear seems to need a little bit of obedience lessons but he is very smart and would respond well to some positive reinforcement. We think he would do best in a home with slightly older kids, probably ages 10 and up would suit him well. Bear is a great dog who would love someone to take him out to do fun things like hiking and maybe even some sledding. If you would like to meet Bear stop by for a visit; Bear is waiting to meet you!

Jackson’s Legacy

I was taken in by Jackson's Legacy Rescue after my person passed away back in April 2008. It was a very sad time for me. None of the other family members could take care of me. I'm not sure why because I'm a good boy and a very loyal and loving dog. Now I'm getting up there in years and I'm so afraid nobody will want me. But I feel and act like I have lots of life left! I just want to settle in with a new family I can call my own. A little bit about me: I am good with most other dogs but not with cats. I've been wonderful with my foster-mom's grandchildren but I don't care to be around them for long periods of time. So it is best that I don't go to a home with young children. My very favorite thing to do is go for walks so I'm hoping there is someone out there who will walk me every day, maybe even 2 or 3 times! I'm great on a leash too. And I ride very nicely in the car so if you want to take me to the park, that's not a problem! I still love to play ball too. And I have another favorite thing to do in hot weather... get into my very own little pool (except I don't like to share it with others). Speaking of hot weather, in the beginning of the summer, you may need to give me some Benadryl because my skin gets itchy, but otherwise my health is fine. As far as my behavior, I'm friendly and calm. I'm happy to lie around as long as I get some attention occasionally. I'm not a cuddle bug – I prefer to lie on the couch but not right in your lap... just knowing you're there is good enough for me. And I know how to "talk" if I want a treat or some affection! Otherwise, I'm nice and quiet. I can be a little protective of toys and bones around other dogs but other than that, I'm very well behaved. I know all my basic commands. My foster mom says I have a very "entertaining" personality and I'm a "love bug." How could you not want to come see me?

I am a very sweet and happy dog who loves attention. I'll play when you want me to play and I'll relax when you want me to relax. I've been waiting for someone to come and take me home for 6 months already! I was abandoned outside the shelter and even though it's much better than being on the street, a home would be wonderful! Unfortunately I can't be in a home with cats but some dogs are okay. If you have one, we would need to meet first. I'm great with kids though and we could play together! I love toys and I really enjoy going for walks. I walk nicely on a leash and I'm good on car rides too. I'm house-trained and crate-trained and I even know all my basic commands. The people here at the shelter love my coloring... I have a brindle body and pretty white coloring on my face with little brown spots. I promise I won't disappoint you if you'll just give me a second chance. Thank you!

I wish my family would have found a place to live for all of us but they left me at a NYC shelter instead when their landlord said, "NO PETS." I've been with Peppertree for 8 months now which is too long for such a sweet dog. I just hope I find a new family soon and I hope that this time it will be forever. I'm house-trained, crate-trained and up to date on all my vaccinations. I'm friendly, I love to be petted and just looking at me will get you a happy tail wag. I love to go for walks but I need some help in learning not to pull. I will need to start off with a harness or training lead. But I do ride very nicely in a car! I'm always interested in what's going on but I can also lie down and chill out nicely. Training me to do anything would be a cinch because I love treats so much! I get along with other dogs but I don't necessarily want them near my food. If you have another dog, putting up my bowls after I eat might help. But since I do tend to guard my food, I would be best placed in a home with adults only or with older children who are taught to understand this doggie behavior. Other than that, I am one wonderful girl who wants to snuggle and be friendly to everyone. I hope I have talked you into at least thinking about letting me be your loving companion!

I was rescued from the end of a cable where I was very unhappy for the first few months of my life. Now I'm enjoying the freedom of running as fast as I can here at the rescue, although I'm still craving a home to call my very own. I am house trained and crate trained. I'm in a foster home with a cat and other dogs. I have to admit that I do like to chase cats. But once I get to know them, I'll settle down. I love to play with other dogs and I have two best friends named Sadie and Millie who you can see at www.K9adopt.org. They are both about my age and I would be in heaven if I could be adopted with one of them, but I know it's not a perfect world. I also like to go for walks, snuggle in bed with people, or just lie on my own bed which I hope will be right next you yours! Please call Sherry at 393-0755 if you think you might like me to be a part of your family.

I've overheard them say that I am simply a wonderful dog! And how cute am I with this face and ears? Unfortunately I got lost down in NYC and they are so overloaded with dogs in their shelters, I ended up in a rescue up here in Albany. Thank heavens. At least now I have a chance. But I've been here for almost 5 months now and I'd really like to move into that special place they call a "forever home." I am a laid back boy when you want me to be but full of energy and eager to learn too! I'm great with people (but older children only please). I am initially shy in new situations but I will just blossom with a little TLC. I love to go for walks (I'm best with a harness) and I LOVE to play any game you want to play. If you have other dogs, I want to be the dominant one. I also much prefer larger dogs to small dogs. I can be around "savvy cats" but if they run I think it's pretty fun to chase them. And I think it's pretty cool that I can easily jump a 4 ft. fence but the people don't think it's all that amusing. So if you do have a fenced yard, the fence needs to be 6 ft. high. Well, that's my story. I think the word that sums me up best is "devoted." Please apply soon so I can go home! I know I will be a very treasured companion.

Even when it was bitter cold and snowing, my owners refused to bring me inside or feed me. I was starving to death in North Carolina. Finally, a good samaritan alerted the rescue. I am now up to date on all my shots, house-trained, crated-trained and eating well! I am still shy at first but I will quickly warm up to you if you just give me a little time and patience. In fact, once I get to know you I would cuddle up to you 24/7 if you'd let me! But because of my background and shyness, they say I need a quiet home without a lot of people coming and going, and I should probably be in a home without small children. I am currently living with other dogs of all sizes and I get along with everyone. I ride nicely in the car, I walk well on a leash and I love to play, especially with my tennis ball. I've been here at the rescue for a while now and even though it's better than where I came from, I sure would like to meet my forever family soon!

I am such a wonderful and friendly dog! I'm the one that the people here at the shelter take to schools when they talk to students about having pets. So nobody understands why I haven't found a forever home yet but they're starting to get very worried because I am showing signs of depression. After all, I was just dumped outside the shelter door over 7 months ago so I haven't had the happiest life. But I would make the most devoted and loving companion to anyone who will give me a chance. I am house-trained and crate-trained. I'm good with children. I love to go for walks and I'm proudly one of the best on-leash walkers at the shelter. I'm great in the car too. I love to have toys but I'm not a chewer. I know my basic commands and I'm certainly capable of learning more. I cannot be in a home with cats but I get along with some dogs so if you have one, we would have to meet first. I love people the most though. I'm a bit shy at first but once I get to know you, I'd like to have every bit of attention that you would give me. If I could just roll in some grass and have my tummy rubbed, I would be in heaven. I'm quiet and easy going and just an all around nice girl. It's just been too long without knowing what a home is like. Please come to see me. Please!

I've been at the shelter for 8 months already. I don't think this is where I'm supposed to spend the rest of my life but some days I have to wonder. I would make a great companion for someone who likes to take long walks...maybe go to the park? I've never actually been to one but I dream about my person and I playing fetch in the nice grass. I like people so much that I tend to jump up on them. It's really about the worst thing I do. But if you don't like that, I'm as trainable as I am lovable! It would be best if I go home with a family of adults or with older children because I wouldn't want someone to get mad at me if I jump up on a younger child. I don't mind cats but we're not sure about other dogs yet. I'm going to meet some other dogs this week so I'll let you know soon. Let's see...what else... Oh yeah, I'm housebroken. I'm quiet. I love to be brushed. And after that nice walk, I'd like to just curl up at your feet... or on my very own bed. Do you think I might find what I'm looking for with you? I'll keep my paws crossed.

Keeper Rescue
(518) 842-2625

I am a big handsome boy (85 lbs) with a big heart to match! I was in a shelter for months and months but kept getting overlooked. The staff at the shelter thought I was such a "great dog" that they called Keeper Rescue. Now I'm in a wonderful foster home but I keep dreaming of finding that forever home where I can be a special part of a loving household. I am always happy and I will be sure to make you smile. I love to be with people and I will show you lots of affection. I like to play fetch, go for walks and I ride nicely in the car. I enjoy the company of other dogs but we're not sure about cats. Although I lived with younger children in the past and I was very good with them, I need to be in a home with older children or adults only because sometimes I forget about my size and strength, especially when I'm being exuberant! But I'm an all-around good boy who will make a great companion to the right family. I would love to meet that family soon. Please call Bill at (518) 842-2625 to see if we would be a good match. I can't wait to meet you!

St. Bernard Mix
5 year old neutered male
H.O.P.E. Animal Rescue
(518) 428-2994
or call Cathy (518) 424-2878

Well, as you can see, I'm a very handsome boy...and very lovable too! I don't know why I've been in shelters and rescues for over 2 years. But the people at HOPE have me figured out so I can tell you a lot about myself. I am completely housetrained and if you happen to be sleeping I will pace and keep sticking my cold wet nose in your face to let you know it’s time to go. I love (and need) to go for walks every day and I walk very nicely on the gentle leader. I love to play fetch...in fact I would play ball all day long if you’d let me! I'm very trainable. Cathy taught me how to sit, shake and lie down and it didn’t take much time either! I'm friendly and very good around other dogs. Cats are unknown. I'm interested, but I haven't been left alone with them. I've been a bit misunderstood in the past. I was adopted once but I was returned to the rescue. They thought I was running after a child when in fact I was only trying to be near my new person. They didn't understand that I have separation anxiety and if I can see you, then I'll do almost anything to be next to you. That’s all I was trying to do that day...but sadly, my adoptive family brought me back. So here I am...waiting again for that special someone. And because I want to be with you all the time, if you leave me unsupervised, I must be crated. Once you get to know me and work with me, you will be able to decide if I can be left alone when you’re not there. I just need to feel safe and I feel most safe when I'm with you. I would do best in a home with adults or maybe older children but I haven't had any experience with younger children. I would love to sleep in bed with you but beware you better climb in first or I'll hog the whole mattress! I should also warn you, I am a major food hound. You probably shouldn't leave food on countertops or anywhere within my reach for that matter. But in spite of my appetite, I have no food aggression. So if you are looking for a very loyal companion, I'm sure willing to give you a chance! I'll be waiting...and hoping...

I came to the shelter in March 2007 and even though the people are very nice to me, I don't want to celebrate a one year anniversary here. I really want a family and a forever home. The only reason I don't seem to find one is because every time someone comes for a dog, I tend to hide in the back of the kennel so I get overlooked again...and again...and again. They don't realize that once I'm out of the cage I am gentle, good with children and great with other animals too! I love to play and I walk nicely on a leash. I like to be close to people and love attention. They say I would make a wonderful family pet or companion for someone. Won't you please come and visit?

Dudley (02/08):

I am so sweet I can hardly believe it myself. I have recent scars from being attacked by other dogs but I have forgiven them and I get along well with all animals. I love people more than anything in the world though and I crave love and attention from them. I suffer from separation anxiety so I need someone who is home with me all the time or people who will take me wherever they go. They're working with me here at the shelter so my anxiety won’t be so severe but right now, I just want to be by your side every minute. I'm not especially interested in playing, but I'm in heaven if I'm leaning on you or you're petting me. I'm also good on a leash and do all of my business outside except when someone forgets to take me out on a consistent schedule. I can be in a family with kids and animals or I can be an only companion. It doesn't matter to me as long as I'm with you. By the way, I drool a little but I guarantee it's a tradeoff for my sweetness. I am truly a special dog who needs a special person.

Neve: 5 year old Mixed Breed (spayed)
Located at the Montgomery County SPCA (518) 842-8050

Two years ago, I was brought to Montgomery County SPCA by the local sheriff.  Even though the people here are very nice to me, it's been hard watching so many others go home while I wait and wait for that special someone to come for me.  The people here are baffled.  I'm housebroken.  I'm non-destructive (really... I don't chew on anything).  And I don't bark at all.  I love being with people just about more than anything.  I would love to go for lots of walks with you.  But I only like to be outside by myself for short periods of time (i.e. to do my business).  Then I scratch at the door to come in.  I especially don't like being out in the cold weather (unless I'm with you).  I am really affectionate without being bothersome (although I do like to give kisses).  I'm not a lap dog but I would love to just quietly lie by your feet and have you pet me or we can play with a toy together.  I'm such a people dog that I would prefer not to be left alone all day... so I hope I get a "stay at home" person or someone who only works part-time.  I haven't had exposure to young children so it really would be best to be with a family without children or maybe with older children.   I know that I need someone to clean my ears once or twice a week.  See, I had surgery on one of my ears because I was getting terrible infections. The surgery damaged one of my eardrums and there's scar tissue.  The cleaning makes it so I don't get more of those painful infections.   I can tell you one thing.  I don't like cats.  I really just don't like cats.  Other dogs I'm not sure about yet.  One time I was involved in a nasty scuffle with a female dog and we both blamed the other for starting it.  So if you have a dog, we would need to meet to see if we like each other.  The only other thing I would really like, is to keep my name... I've had it for such a long time and it's the only one I know.  Well enough about me...what do you think about me?

Peena: 1 1/2 Year Spayed Female Lab Mix
Located at Waggin' Tails Pet Rescue
Contact: Amy (518) 356-1100

My family left me at Waggin' Tails Rescue because they were moving and I guess I was in the way. Hard to believe because I thought I was doing everything right. I am a very happy, high energy dog with lots of love and affection to give. I love to play and go for walks... and like most other canine companions, I would rather be with you than be left alone... I tend to whine just to make sure you know that. The people at Waggin' Tails say I need a consistent, structured, loving environment and a family that will follow through on teaching me basic commands. I would do best in a home with just adults. We're not sure yet about older children but I'm just too rambunctious for toddlers. I'm okay with cats but sometimes I play a little too rough for them. I've had mixed experiences with dogs so if you have one, we would need to meet. But I should tell you, I was recently attacked by a dog when I was outside and it really scared me. Since then, I have become aggressive toward other dogs... but only when I'm outside (I pull on the leash and bark). Most of all, I need opportunities to burn off my energy! Space to run... walks around the neighborhood... a fenced yard... chew toys... and at the end of the day, opportunities to snuggle... that's what I dream about... sigh...

Mona: 8 or 9 year old Mixed Breed (spayed)

I was found wandering aimlessly in March 2003 and I've been at Ayres Animal Shelter ever since.  I am a very easy-going, completely housebroken and very obedient.  I would make a wonderful companion for anyone but I need to be an only pet.  I've been waiting for such a long time for my forever home... but I know there is someone out there who is perfect for me... so I'll keep my paws crossed.  If you think you might be that someone, please call (518) 673-5670.

Thank you.

Thunder & Lightening: 10 Year Old Shepherds (spayed/neutered)

We are such sweet dogs.  We get along with people and other animals and just don't understand why our people left us in a condemned house when they moved to Florida.  After neighbors complained that we were alone and starving, a relative of our family brought us to a local vet to be euthanized.  The vet called Helping Paws Rescue and they saved us.  We have finally gained our weight back and the vet gave us a clean bill of health. We are up to date on our vaccinations. Now we just want to find a loving home where we can still be together.  If you are interested in coming to see us, please call (518) 883-8402 or (518) 883-8263. Thank you.

Jade: 10 year old Mixed Breed (neutered)

I am so sad that my people moved to a new home in March and couldn't take me with them.  I am well behaved, mild mannered and I've always gotten along great with the other dogs and cats I lived with.  But now I'm unhappy sleeping in a kennel... I was used to sleeping in a bed.  I just want to go to a real home where someone will love me and take care of me like before.  And even though I am a big boy (about 100 pounds), I think you will love my personality.  Please come and see me at Ayres Animal Shelter or call (518) 673-5670.  Thanks and I hope to meet you soon.

Rocky: 7 year old Mastiff /Rottie Mix (neutered)

I was dropped off at the Saratoga County Animal Shelter just because my person was moving.  I'm a great dog so I don't understand why I couldn't go with him.  I'm housebroken, good with children, and playful.  Unfortunately, some people are afraid of dogs that look like me.  But on the inside, I am just like any other good dog (and you can't tell from my picture, but I actually have beautiful brown coloring).  If you come to the shelter to see me, I will bark and you might think I'm mean but I promise that once I am out of the kennel, I'm as friendly as can be.  Please give me a second chance.  You can call (518) 885-4113 or stop by the shelter. Thank you!

Hi, I'm Jade.  I am a beautiful 2 year old brindle lab mix.   I am very well behaved.  I know basic commands, I'm housebroken, and I'm very affectionate!   I love toys and treats and I love to play and go for walks.  I often have playmates at the shelter... but then they get adopted.  I don't understand why I've been here for a year.  I get along with dogs and cats.  I used to be timid of men but I'm much better now.  I have an adorable personality if I do say so myself.  But they say I scare people off because when I'm in my kennel and someone comes by, I want to be noticed.  So I jump... and jump... and jump some more.  I don't do this when I'm not in my kennel though!  I just want to be petted and loved.  If you would come by and spend a few minutes with me outside of my kennel, you'll see how wonderful I really am.  Please give me a chance!   I am at the Montgomery County SPCA on Route 5S in Amsterdam, NY.  Please call 518-842-8050 or 518-339-5179 for more information.
